This Was All Fields: A Project by Julia Heslop

19 September 2024 – 30 March 202510.00–17.00

As part of a ten-year project, artist Julia Heslop is exploring the social and environmental impacts of large scale housing development. Recently, she has been looking at the fields around the village of Murton in North Tyneside where 2,700 houses are due to be built, transforming the landscape immensely with lasting implications for local residents – both human and non-human.

Understanding how children use, respond to and connect with this landscape is central to Heslop’s work. This display showcases the work created with children from Year 4 at Langley First School in West Monkseaton. After undertaking sensory walks around the fields, the children created monoprints based on what they found, and then developed them into zines exploring how the land has changed over time.

You can download Julia’s booklet detailing the project here.
