Shit Happens!

Shit Happens! is a collaborative project, led by visual artists Louise Mackenzie exploring perceptions of human waste and considers how we might create more sustainable toilet facilities in urban settings.  

The audio installation, sited In the second floor loos, has been created from an archive of conversations on our perception of, and uses for, human waste. Shit Happens! draws upon expertise from a diverse population, experts and members of the community; from artists to wormery experts to local environmentalist.  

About the Contributor:  

Louise Mackenzie is an artist and researcher based in Newcastle, UK. She is a director of ASCUS Art and Science, Edinburgh and a lecturer Lecturer in Contempoary Art Practice, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee.

About the Symposium:

The Sound and Environment Symposium has been organised by Newcastle University’s Sound + Environment Research Group, exploring the ways sound can deepen our understanding of environments and the communities inhabiting them.
